AFSMI’s 2008 S-Business Awards Program

AWARDS OVERVIEW

The AFSMI S-Business Awards Program is one of the most widely recognized programs honoring excellence in the global services industry. Each year this ceremony is anticipated by Association members, chapters, and leading organizations from across the globe as they come together to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of individuals and chapters who have truly distinguished themselves through their dedication to the profession, their organizations, and the Association. Throughout history and for many years to come, these awards make their homes on office desks, in company lobbies, and on headquarters’ walls as a continual reminder and representation of what it means to be world-class in a specialized area of services. These awards raise the bar on setting services standards, and it is with great pride that we continue this tradition of recognizing such industry excellence.

GEORGE O. HARMON AWARD

The prestigious George O. Harmon Award is named after George Harmon, one of AFSMI’s original founding members. This unique and prestigious award honors an individual in the services industry who has made important contributions to their company, to the industry, and to AFSMI.

This year we are very proud to honor Bill Steenburgh, Senior Vice President of the North America Solutions Group at Xerox. Leading an organization of 16,500 employees, Bill is responsible for delivering hardware services, outsourced document management services, and professional services for Xerox customers in the United States.

Bill has a long and active history with AFSMI. He has served as president of the Association’s Finger Lakes Chapter. He received the AFSMI President's Award in 2002 in recognition for excellence and leadership in the services industry, and in 2004 he was inducted into the AFSMI President's Club. Bill has contributed thought-leadership articles to the Sbusiness journal and other industry publications, and he is well recognized for his tremendous support, enthusiasm, and dedication to the services sector, to his organization, and in supporting the AFSMI, SSPA, TPSA, and SRII communities.

CIRCLE OF EXCELLENCE AWARD

The Circle of Excellence Award honors an AFSMI chapter president who has demonstrated excellence and strong leadership in his or her role as president during the past year.

We are proud to present this esteemed award to U.K. Chapter President Simon Morris. Simon is the Vice President of Marketing Operations at ClickSoftware, where over the last 10 years, he has played a key role in educating the market on the concept of service chain optimization.

Simon has shown tremendous commitment, drive, and leadership within AFSMI’s U.K. Chapter.  In 2007, he was elected chapter president and quickly put together a powerful leadership team. He ensures that the chapter runs professional, well-attended events every quarter and has attracted a countless number of top-class speakers.

Simon has not only shown tremendous commitment and leadership within the U.K. Chapter, but he has also attended and contributed to several Chapter President Meetings in North America and Europe, and he was elected into the Global Membership Committee in 2005 and the Global Education Committee in 2006.

We are proud to acknowledge Simon’s outstanding chapter leadership with this well recognized award.

AFSMI EDITOR’S AWARD

The distinguished Award is given to the individual who has shared his / her knowledge, experience, lessons learned, and proven best practices with industry peers by contributing an article of exceptional quality to the Sbusiness journal. The AFSMI Editor’s Award honors writing excellence and recognizes an author who demonstrates expert knowledge on issues critical to the effective operation of a services organization.

This year the award goes to Mark Vigoroso, Chief Services Strategist at Qualcomm, for his article titled “OEMs: Justifying the Smart Services Deployment,” published in the Winter 2008 issue of Sbusiness.

Mark’s article offers hands-on, practical knowledge on the topic of smart services, and how uniquely poised the technology is in today’s competitive climate. Mark has spent the past 12+ years in the service and supply chain arenas and is considered a top expert in the field.

AFSMI CHAPTER OF THE YEAR

This award recognizes the chapter who has shown sustained performance, growth and sustainability, excellent leadership, and regional content contributions to AFSMI constituents.

We are proud to present this year’s award to the German Chapter. The German chapter received this award for their forward thinking, innovative ideas, strong leadership and active participation with their chapter members.

Wilhelm Taurel is accepting this award on behalf of the German Chapter. Wilhelm has been an active member since 2004 and is the German Chapter’s Vice-President.

AFSMI PRESIDENT’S CLUB

AFSMI proudly recognizes AFSMI members who have contributed time and energy into the Association by their participation, promotion, and commitment to the industry and AFSMI at least a five-year period. Members of the President’s Club provide important input and support as needed by the Association, members, and/or chapters.

We proudly recognize the three 2008 inductees…

DAVID BATES
David Bates is a true leader and has been involved with the AFSMI organization for five years. Under his direction and leadership, his team at Reynolds & Reynolds won the prestigious Field Service Management International Service Quality Award. This award recognized the teams who provide outstanding technical phone support, hardware installation, and repair of computer equipment at automobile dealerships across the United States and Canada. We congratulate David on his induction in to the AFSMI President’s Club, and thank him for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the Association throughout the past five years.

PIM BONSEL
After nearly two decades of dedicated service to the technology services industry, Pim Bonsel retired from his executive vice presidency position of AFSMI’s Global Research earlier this year. Pim has been a part of AFSMI since 1992, which makes him the longest-running employee of the Association. Day in and day out, Pim has produced more by accident than most others produce on purpose, with a list of achievements that include authoring research reports, articles, and speaking at key services events all over the world. He has served on countless committees and boards, and has been an authority and mentor to many whose lives he has touched throughout his professional career.

JOHN SCHOENEWALD
After over three decades of hard work and dedication to the services and support industry, John recently retired.  With deep roots in services, John became a member of AFSMI in 1986, and since that time, he has played the role of both passenger and captain, leading the Association through calm and rough seas, charted and uncharted territories, always with a strong business sense and an unwavering dedication to seeing the industry rise to where it is today.

John has worn many hats, carved out many paths, and opened many doors during his tenure with AFSMI. Prior to assuming the role of CEO in 2001, he served three terms as the Association’s chairman and president—an accomplishment held only by him. He sat on the international board of directors from 1996-2007, established a secondary board of directors for EMEA in 2001, and was a member of the Senior Executive Forum in the 1990s.

“S-business,” a term that has come to be known well in the services industry, was first coined by John as he sought to demystify services and give it a name we can all relate to. John has written many columns, has been quoted and featured in many industry publications, and has become known as one of services’ truest icons.
